SCST Inc. is a growing firm that provides environmental science and engineering, geotechnical engineering, special inspection and materials testing, and facilities consulting services. We are currently looking for an entry or mid-level Environmental Geologist, Scientist or Engineer for our Chicago, IL or Milwaukee WI office.

Position Summary

This position will provide technical support to our Environmental Science and Engineering Group on various environmental projects primarily on federal contracts for sites, including federal facilities in the mid-western USA. Substantial travel and fieldwork will be required.

Responsibilities

  1. The position will require a mixture of field activities and office activities. Field-related tasks include: Preparation for field tasks and execution of field work including air, soil, sediment, and groundwater sampling; remedial construction management or oversight; installing, developing and sampling monitoring wells; logging soil borings and collection of soil samples; drum and waste sampling; and using Scribe software to complete chain-of-custody forms.
  2. Conduct environmental field studies and surveys; Working as part of a field team to conduct investigation and/or oversight projects
  3. Provide technical support as part of a project team performing preliminary assessments, site investigations, remedial investigations/actions, site surveys, feasibility studies as part of providing solutions to clients under CERCLA, RCRA and other environmental compliance regulations.
  4. Provide field oversight for sampling, responses, and remedial activities by others.
  5. Office tasks will include organization of project data (data entry into existing database), data analysis, compilation of field data for project archives and reporting, authoring portions of, or complete, reports, assistance with all activities involved in preparing a report that goes to the client, and management and maintenance of project files.
  6. Writing and supporting the writing of documents, including field oversight documentation reports, field reports, health and safety plans, quality assurance project plans, field sampling plans, data management plans, remedial investigation reports and feasibility studies.
  7. Position has promotion potential to task manager, field team leader, or project manager, depending on experience.
  8. May also work on other environmental and clean construction projects, depending on workload.
  9. May perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with Microsoft Access a plus.
  2. Proven organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal with diverse personalities.
  4. Demonstrated technical writing ability.
  5. Ability to perform field operations, travel, and work effectively in a team environment.
  6. Construction inspection/oversight experience is a plus.
  7. Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail.
  8. Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
  9. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and demanding environment. Knowledge in organizing, planning, and prioritizing work.
  10. Ability to follow directions and to work independently.
  11. Experience under a RAC or other Federal programs a definite plus.

Experience/Education/Registrations

  1. B.S. in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or other related discipline.
  2. Zero (0) to five (5) years of experience with similar work, including sampling and data management.
  3. Experience in environmental sampling a plus
  4. Experience with the CERCLA (Superfund) Process is beneficial.
  5. Certification of 40-hour HAZWOPER preferred, will train if required.
  6. Current First Aid & CPR Training (preferred), will train if required.

Work Requirements:

  1. The position will require working in the SCST office located in Chicago, IL or Milwaukee, WI.
  2. Travel mainly in Midwest required, primarily for field work, and is anticipated to be 50% of the time or greater. The travel requirements may change as this position evolves.
  3. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  4. Ability to pass a HAZWOPER physical.
  5. Must have valid driver's license.
  6. Must be capable of passing a security background check and working on federal government installations and projects.
